College Bound
Kamp Khalil Alum and UCF Freshman, Zahirah Calloway, talks college and the transition from home.
1.Since starting college, what is your favorite thing to do?
Honestly, stay in my room and chill with friends. I watch a lot of Netflix. One thing you’ve got to remember about college is you will have a lot of free time to do whatever you want. Be responsible with your free time.
2.Have you made lots of new friends?
Yes. In college, if you want friends you have to put yourself out there. Meet people at crazy events. I met some people at a Manhunt thing we had at school. Whatever your interest is there is usually events for it.
3.Do you feel that High school prepared you for the academic work?
I took a lot of rigorous classes, so yes I can say so.
4.What do you miss about home?
My mom’s food. The beach. I live in Orlando at UCF and we’re landlocked so no water nearby. I really love the water so I miss that a lot.
5.What piece of advice you would give to a high school senior?
Take AP classes, stay active, and focus on the end game (good college). There will be a lot of distractions, but just keep swimming and you’ll be fin.
6.Dorm life…what are the pros and cons?
Pro: its really small, so you get to know your roommate faster.
Con: its really small, so you have no PRIVACY!!
The beds are uncomfortable, so get a mattress pad.
Tip: Try to make your room feel like home (it’s easy to get home sick if you don’t)
7.Freshman 15…will you catch the disease?!
I hope not. Moderation and know yourself. Don’t eat just because you are bored.
8. Is there any type of Muslim organization on campus? Are you a member or plan to be?
MSA and No
9. Is there anything that you learned from your experience at Kamp Khalil that has been useful in your transition to college?
Kamp Khalil taught me how to live with people you don’t know but are forced to get to know really quick.
